Functional Safety of Road Infrastructure to Support Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM)

The goal of the AugmentedCCAM project is to help accelerate the adoption of solutions for cooperative, connected, and automated mobility (CCAM) by developing concepts for physical, digital, and communication (PDI) infrastructure to support CCAM.
Within the project, several concrete use cases from the CCAM driving environment were developed using PDI: giving right of way to an approaching emergency vehicle, protecting vulnerable road users, optimizing traffic management based on vehicle data, determining the location (localization) of various objects and connected vehicles, minimum-risk maneuvering, optimized logistics operations using advanced digital technologies and solutions, integration of vehicles into traffic flow, and driving in areas with temporary roadwork.
To assess the impact of the proposed PDI improvements, a methodology was developed that covers eight different areas of impact. The second area covers the assessment of infrastructure functional safety in relation to autonomous vehicles: the readiness of road infrastructure for CCAM and autonomous driving failures.
The article presents the project and case studies, as well as an example of the use of indicators to support CCAM solutions.
