Traditional signalling & train protection systems are more and more replaced by the new European Train Control System. While Level 1 is designed as an add on solution to existing signalling & train protection systems, Level 2 allows skipping traditional wayside signalling. Therefore, Level 2 offers the opportunity to redesign the block layout even of existing railway lines. This feature is interesting for bottleneck sections in a railway network. Shorter blocks increase capacity by shorter headways. In this article software, OpenTrack is used to show the benefits of shorter blocks in Level 2 on existing railway lines in Austria.
